Strategies of ionoregulation in the freshwater nymph of the mayfly Hexagenia rigida
Fargol Nowghani, Sima Jonusaite, Trudy Watson-Leung, Andrew Donini, Scott P. Kelly
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2017 220: 3997-4006; doi: 10.1242/jeb.166132

Summary: Freshwater mayfly nymphs regulate salt and water balance using the alimentary canal, Malpighian tubules and tracheal gills, and data provide the first direct evidence that the tracheal gills are ion transport organs.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Ammonia excretion in mytilid mussels is facilitated by ciliary beating
    J. Thomsen, N. Himmerkus, N. Holland, F. J. Sartoris, M. Bleich, M. Tresguerres
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2016 219: 2300-2310; doi: 10.1242/jeb.139550

Highlighted Article: The plicate organ of mytilid mussels is a main site for ammonia excretion, which is facilitated by Rh channels and ciliary beating.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
An animal homolog of plant Mep/Amt transporters promotes ammonia excretion by the anal papillae of the disease vector mosquito Aedes aegypti
Helen Chasiotis, Adrian Ionescu, Lidiya Misyura, Phuong Bui, Kimberly Fazio, Jason Wang, Marjorie Patrick, Dirk Weihrauch, Andrew Donini
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2016 219: 1346-1355; doi: 10.1242/jeb.134494

Summary: An animal homolog of plant and bacterial ammonium transporters supports ammonia excretion at the anal papillae of mosquito larvae.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLES
Osmoregulation in the Hawaiian anchialine shrimp Halocaridina rubra (Crustacea: Atyidae): expression of ion transporters, mitochondria-rich cell proliferation and hemolymph osmolality during salinity transfers
Justin C. Havird, Scott R. Santos, Raymond P. Henry
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2014 217: 2309-2320; doi: 10.1242/jeb.103051
  • RESEARCH ARTICLES
Tissue-specific ionomotive enzyme activity and K+ reabsorption reveal the rectum as an important ionoregulatory organ in larval Chironomus riparius exposed to varying salinity
Sima Jonusaite, Scott P. Kelly, Andrew Donini
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2013 216: 3637-3648; doi: 10.1242/jeb.089219
