oxygen- and capacity-limited thermal tolerance

  • SHORT COMMUNICATION
Brain cooling marginally increases acute upper thermal tolerance in Atlantic cod
Fredrik Jutfelt, Dominique G. Roche, Timothy D. Clark, Tommy Norin, Sandra A. Binning, Ben Speers-Roesch, Mirjam Amcoff, Rachael Morgan, Anna H. Andreassen, Josefin Sundin
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2019 222: jeb208249 doi: 10.1242/jeb.208249 Published 7 October 2019

Summary: Selective cooling of cod brain during whole-animal thermal ramping marginally increases acute upper thermal tolerance, suggesting that direct thermal effects on brain neurons may contribute to the acute upper thermal tolerance.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Aerobic scope increases throughout an ecologically relevant temperature range in coho salmon
Graham D. Raby, Matthew T. Casselman, Steven J. Cooke, Scott G. Hinch, Anthony P. Farrell, Timothy D. Clark
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2016 219: 1922-1931; doi: 10.1242/jeb.137166

Summary: Coho salmon do not conform to existing predictions about the temperature dependence of aerobic scope in Pacific salmon.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Oxygen safety margins set thermal limits in an insect model system
    Leigh Boardman, John S. Terblanche
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2015 218: 1677-1685; doi: 10.1242/jeb.120261

Highlighted Article: Larval but not pupal Bombyx mori are oxygen limited, with hypoxia significantly decreasing CTmax, suggesting that oxygen safety margins set thermal limits in air-breathing invertebrates.

  • REVIEW
Aerobic scope measurements of fishes in an era of climate change: respirometry, relevance and recommendations
Timothy D. Clark, Erik Sandblom, Fredrik Jutfelt
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2013 216: 2771-2782; doi: 10.1242/jeb.084251
