Acute effects of intense exercise on the antioxidant system in birds: does exercise training help?
Clara Cooper-Mullin, Wales A. Carter, Scott R. McWilliams
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2019 222: jeb210443 doi: 10.1242/jeb.210443 Published 1 October 2019

Summary: Daily exercise training of zebra finches over many weeks increases the coordination between the enzymatic and non-enzymatic components of their antioxidant system and this reduces the oxidative damage associated with exercise.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Hormetic benefits of prior anoxia exposure in buffering anoxia stress in a soil-pupating insect
Bertanne Visser, Caroline M. Williams, Daniel A. Hahn, Clancy A. Short, Giancarlo López-Martínez
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2018 221: jeb167825 doi: 10.1242/jeb.167825 Published 19 March 2018

Summary: Prior anoxia exposure benefits organismal performance, increases lipid levels and reduces the oxygen debt compared with a singular exposure to anoxia in the Caribbean fruit fly.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
The oxidative debt of fasting: evidence for short- to medium-term costs of advanced fasting in adult king penguins
Quentin Schull, Vincent A. Viblanc, Antoine Stier, Hédi Saadaoui, Emilie Lefol, François Criscuolo, Pierre Bize, Jean-Patrice Robin
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2016 219: 3284-3293; doi: 10.1242/jeb.145250

Summary: Fasting induces a transitory exposure to oxidative stress, and effort to recover in body mass after an advanced fasting period may be a neglected carryover cost of fasting in king penguins.

Prolonged fasting activates Nrf2 in post-weaned elephant seals
José Pablo Vázquez-Medina, José G. Soñanez-Organis, Ruben Rodriguez, Jose A. Viscarra, Akira Nishiyama, Daniel E. Crocker, Rudy M. Ortiz
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2013 216: 2870-2878; doi: 10.1242/jeb.081927
