Courtship

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Behavioural responses to video and live presentations of females reveal a dissociation between performance and motivational aspects of birdsong
Logan S. James, Raina Fan, Jon T. Sakata
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2019 222: jeb206318 doi: 10.1242/jeb.206318 Published 16 August 2019

Summary: Zebra finches are less motivated to court videos of females than live females, but courtship songs to these stimuli are similar in performance, suggesting a dissociation between motivation and performance.

  • SHORT COMMUNICATION
Lizards assess complex social signals by lateralizing colour but not motion detection
    Anuradha Batabyal, Maria Thaker
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2018 221: jeb173252 doi: 10.1242/jeb.173252 Published 1 March 2018

Summary: Multicomponent social signals are analysed separately in the two brain hemispheres in lizards wherein laterality is observed in response to social colour stimuli but not in response to motion stimuli.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Motor and mechanical bases of the courtship call of the male treehopper Umbonia crassicornis
Carol I. Miles, Brianna E. Allison, Michael J. Losinger, Quang T. Su, Ronald N. Miles
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2017 220: 1915-1924; doi: 10.1242/jeb.147819

Summary: Male treehoppers make use of the natural resonance of their abdomens when they generate their courtship vibrational signals.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLES
Arginine vasotocin, steroid hormones and social behavior in the green anole lizard (Anolis carolinensis)
    Leslie A. Dunham, Walter Wilczynski
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2014 217: 3670-3676; doi: 10.1242/jeb.107854

Sweta Agrawal, Steve Safarik, Michael Dickinson
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2014 217: 2796-2805; doi: 10.1242/jeb.105817
  • RESEARCH ARTICLES
The smell of moulting: N-acetylglucosamino-1,5-lactone is a premoult biomarker and candidate component of the courtship pheromone in the urine of the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus
Michiya Kamio, Manfred Schmidt, Markus W. Germann, Julia Kubanek, Charles D. Derby
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2014 217: 1286-1296; doi: 10.1242/jeb.099051
