Cervical air sac oxygen profiles in diving emperor penguins: parabronchial ventilation and the respiratory oxygen store
Cassondra L. Williams, Max F. Czapanskiy, Jason S. John, Judy St Leger, Miriam Scadeng, Paul J. Ponganis
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2021 224: jeb230219 doi: 10.1242/jeb.230219 Published 11 January 2021

Summary: Air sac oxygen profiles of emperor penguins demonstrate that air flow between the air sacs and through the lungs maintains gas exchange during dives as well as on the surface.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Rapid cold hardening protects against sublethal freezing injury in an Antarctic insect
Nicholas M. Teets, Yuta Kawarasaki, Leslie J. Potts, Benjamin N. Philip, J. D. Gantz, David L. Denlinger, Richard E. Lee, Jr
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2019 222: jeb206011 doi: 10.1242/jeb.206011 Published 7 August 2019

Summary: Rapid cold hardening has a well-established role in preventing death from cold; present data show it also protects against non-lethal freezing injury in a freeze-tolerant Antarctic insect.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Will the Antarctic tardigrade Acutuncus antarcticus be able to withstand environmental stresses related to global climate change?
Ilaria Giovannini, Tiziana Altiero, Roberto Guidetti, Lorena Rebecchi
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2018 221: jeb160622 doi: 10.1242/jeb.160622 Published 20 February 2018

Highlighted Article: Acutuncus antarcticus tolerates stressors as desiccation, temperature and ultraviolet radiation, although radiation negatively affects its life cycle. This tardigrade is able to adapt to changing environmental conditions.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Juvenile Antarctic rockcod (Trematomus bernacchii) are physiologically robust to CO2-acidified seawater
Brittany E. Davis, Nathan A. Miller, Erin E. Flynn, Anne E. Todgham
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2016 219: 1203-1213; doi: 10.1242/jeb.133173

Summary: Juvenile Antarctic emerald rockcod are robust to projected ocean acidification scenarios and may have the capacity to adjust for future increases in PCO2 by increasing acid-base compensation through increased ventilation.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Elevated temperature causes metabolic trade-offs at the whole-organism level in the Antarctic fish Trematomus bernacchii
Tina Sandersfeld, William Davison, Miles D. Lamare, Rainer Knust, Claudio Richter
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2015 218: 2373-2381; doi: 10.1242/jeb.122804

Summary: High-Antarctic fish exposed to a temperature increase of 2°C show an 84% reduction in growth, in contrast to a complete temperature compensation of routine metabolism.

  • ORGANISMAL STRESS
Surviving in a frozen desert: environmental stress physiology of terrestrial Antarctic arthropods
Nicholas M. Teets, David L. Denlinger
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2014 217: 84-93; doi: 10.1242/jeb.089490
