aestivation

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Frogs seek hypoxic microhabitats that accentuate metabolic depression during dormancy
Giulia S. Rossi, Rebecca L. Cramp, Patricia A. Wright, Craig E. Franklin
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2020 223: jeb218743 doi: 10.1242/jeb.218743 Published 21 January 2020

Summary: Frogs seek hypoxic microhabitats in response to habitat drying. This behaviour, in turn, accelerates and accentuates metabolic depression during aestivation.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Distinct physiological, biochemical and morphometric adjustments in the malaria vectors Anopheles gambiae and A. coluzzii as means to survive dry season conditions in Burkina Faso
    K. Hidalgo, C. Montazeau, D. Siaussat, V. Braman, M. Trabalon, F. Simard, D. Renault, R. K. Dabiré, K. Mouline
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2018 221: jeb174433 doi: 10.1242/jeb.174433 Published 21 March 2018

Summary: A diverse and complex pattern of physiological mechanisms occurs in the Anopheles gambiae s.l. mosquito species and at the population level to cope with the harsh dry season.

  • REVIEW
Prevention of muscle wasting and osteoporosis: the value of examining novel animal models
Beau D. Reilly, Craig E. Franklin
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2016 219: 2582-2595; doi: 10.1242/jeb.128348

Summary: Understanding the biology of animals that experience natural periods of disuse but suffer little musculoskeletal atrophy may reveal novel regulatory factors and lead to new therapeutics.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Desiccation tolerance in Anopheles coluzzii: the effects of spiracle size and cuticular hydrocarbons
Arthur C. Arcaz, Diana L. Huestis, Adama Dao, Alpha S. Yaro, Moussa Diallo, John Andersen, Gary J. Blomquist, Tovi Lehmann
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2016 219: 1675-1688; doi: 10.1242/jeb.135665

Summary: Seasonal variation in desiccation tolerance of malaria mosquitoes is shaped by cuticular hydrocarbon composition and quantity and possibly by smaller spiracles. Seasonal allometries indicate season-specific developmental programs, consistent with aestivation.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLES
Each to their own: skeletal muscles of different function use different biochemical strategies during aestivation at high temperature
Karen M. Young, Rebecca L. Cramp, Craig E. Franklin
    Journal of Experimental Biology 2013 216: 1012-1024; doi: 10.1242/jeb.072827
