Mating calls serve as the primary mediator of social interactions in túngara frogs, including female mate choice. Chakraborty and Burmeister (pp. 3671–3677) show that estradiol changes the way that a female's brain responds to the sounds of mating calls. Not only does estradiol increase the neural activity of the auditory system, it modifies how the preoptic area responds to mating calls in a manner that predicts mate choice decisions. Nocturnal reef residents have deep-sea-like eyes
Fanny de Busserolles and colleagues from The University of Queensland have discovered that the eyes of nocturnal reef fish have multibank retinas, layers of photoreceptors, similar to the eyes of deep-sea fish that live in dim light conditions.
