Supplementary Movie 1: Video recording of the monitor of the controlling computer showing the capture of the video image from the laser Doppler vibrometer and the analyser windows displaying FFT and time domain from laser and microphones signals. Stimulation of the left plectrum in a living male Gryllus bimaculatus, using an excised file driven by a motor (the cog-cricket system), began with voltages that provide a tooth-strike rate of ca. 10,000 teeth s−1, and was gradually adjusted to lower levels till a tooth strike rate of ca. 5000 teeth s−1 was obtained. Note the change and gain in amplitude in the sound envelope and the tapering of the dominant frequency peak when the tooth-strike rate approaches 5000 teeth s−1
