About the Cover
Cover: Elacatinus gobies (photo: Elacatinus evelynae, Karen L. Cheney) have evolved into two monophyletic lineages, one of which cleans parasites from the outer surfaces of visiting 'client' fishes. Within this group, green and blue stripes have evolved from basal yellow striped species. Using models of fish vision, Lettieri et al. (pp. 2194-2203) tested whether stripe colours have different signalling potential in typical microhabitats. Blue stripes were found to have higher chromatic contrast to the majority of fish visual systems tested, especially among dichromats, a class to which most predators belong.
