About the Cover
Cover: A TUNEL-stained Temora stylifera copepod female fed on liposomes encapsulating the diatom toxin 2-trans,4-trans decadienal, which induces apoptosis in body tissues (top) and gonads (bottom), leading to a rapid decline in embryo viability and female survival. Diatoms, regarded as the base of the marine food chain involving copepods and leading to fish, produce a series of toxic compounds to deter grazing. Until now it was believed that these compounds were teratogens affecting copepod offspring survival. In their study (pp. 1426−1433), Buttino et al. used giant liposomes to deliver the diatom toxin, and found that adult females are affected as well.
