About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover: All visible red pigment of Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, is contained in erythrophores. They cover essential regions and enable krill to move pigment swiftly to appear either red (pigment dispersed) or transparent (pigment aggregated). L. Auerswald, U. Freier, A. Lopata and B. Meyer describe details of this physiological colour change and also seasonal differences in pigmentation (pp. 3850−3858). Possible implications for protection from harmful solar radiation and camouflage from predators are discussed. The cover was designed by L. Auerswald using photographs by C. Pape and U. Freier.
