About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover: Organization of a typical Bombus impatiens nest showing sealed brood cells (closed domes), honey pots (liquid visible in cells) and pollen pots (containing yellow pollen). Stored pollen is an essential protein source for developing brood, and a supply of high quality protein is therefore important for colony growth and eventual reproduction through drone and virgin queen production. K. S. Mapalad, D. Leu and J. C. Nieh demonstrate that foragers heat up their thoracic body temperature when collecting higher quality pollen and may thus tune foraging efficiency to pollen quality (pp. 2239−2242). Photo by James C. Nieh.
