About the Cover
Cover: The polar bears at Kolmården Djurpark in Sweden participated in hearing evaluations while anaesthetized for physical examinations (see article by P. E. Nachtigall et al. on pp. 1116−1122). Hearing measurements obtained using evoked auditory potentials showed that the three bears heard sounds very well at frequencies much higher than those made by the bears themselves or their primary prey items − ringed seals. These were the first measurements of hearing of any bear.
