About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover: The banded water snake (Nerodia fasciata) lives in wetland habitats in the southern USA. Small banded water snakes eat mainly small, slender fish whereas larger individuals shift to eating large, relatively bulky frogs. Shawn Vincent and colleagues studied how ontogenetic changes in the structure and function of the feeding system in banded water snakes relate to their diet. These snakes show positive allometric growth in the jaws, the jaw muscles, and gape, which enable them to shift from eating small, slender prey to eating large, bulky prey (p. 2057−2069).
