About the Cover
Cover: The structure and mechanical properties of the specialised cuticle of insect joints remain largely unknown. Using nanoindentation experiments, N. Barbakadze, S. Enders, S. Gorb and E. Arzt measured the mechanical properties of superficial layers of the gula cuticle from the head articulation system of the beetle Pachnoda marginata (pp. 722-730). Surfaces in this system operate in contact and must be resistant to friction and wear, while at the same time providing high mobility of the joint.
