About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover: The freezing (−1.910C) waters of McMurdo Sound, Antarctica abound with ice crystals, and anchor ice forms on the shallow bottom. Although adults of the notothenioid Gymnodraco acuticeps, shown here in an anchor ice lair, are protected against freezing by high levels of antifreeze proteins, the larvae have surprisingly little antifreeze upon hatching into the icy waters. Paradoxically, the eggs and larvae resist freezing, in part due to physical barriers such as the skin and gill epithelia, and the chorion surrounding the egg (see article by Cziko, Evans, Cheng and DeVries, pp. 407-420).
