Cover: Locomotion may play a role in both the primary and secondary defenses of shallow-water octopuses, with possible trade-offs between predator deception (primary defense) and fast-escape (secondary defense). Abdopus aculeatus is one of two animals known to walk bipedally using the support of a muscular hydrostat rather than a rigid skeleton. To explore possible interactions between defense behaviors and biomechanics, C. L. Huffard compared speeds and variation in body form during crawling, bipedal walking, swimming and jetting (pp. 3697−3707). Bipedal locomotion proceeded as fast as swimming and can be considered a form of fast escape that also incorporates elements of predator deception.
