About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover: Flying snakes of the genus Chrysopelea locomote through the air. Socha studied how the paradise tree snake (C. paradisi) begins flight from a horizontal substrate and tested if multiple take-off modes differed in performance (pp. 3358-3369). The most commonly used take-off behaviour was the 'anchored J-loop take-off' (shown in the images and figure), in which the snake hangs its anterior body from the branch in a J-shaped posture and jumps leading with the head moving up and then away from the branch. Such a take-off represents the only true jumping known in snakes. Photo by Jake Socha, assisted by Chim Chee Kong.
