About the Cover
Cover: The Portuguese Man O'War, Physalia physalis, is a warm water siphonophore with a bladder-like float, which uses cnidocytes (sting cells; insert) in its tentacles for prey capture. The discharge of these complex cells is thought to be an exocytotic event. To study the mechanism of the discharge, Bouchard et al. (pp. 2979-2989) produced a cnidocyte-specific cDNA library and screened it for voltage-gated ion channels (graphs). A Ca2+
subunit and a K+ channel were identified and functionally expressed. Photos by R. A. Gleeson and P. A. V. Anderson.
