About the Cover
Cover:
This mother-calf pair of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus have very different surface area to volume ratios as a result of their different body size. Despite these body size differences, their blubber layers provide similar amounts of insulation (see article by R. C. Dunkin, W. A. McLellan, J. E. Blum and D. A. Pabst, pp. 1469-1480). Although adult dolphins have thicker blubber than younger dolphins, they have relatively less lipid in their blubber layer, which results in similar insulation values for neonatal and adult animals.
