About the Cover
Cover:
While the majority of bats are poor crawlers, the common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus) demonstrates exceptional agility on the ground. Previously, this difference was attributed to the fact that vampire legs are more robust than those of other bats. Measurements of hindlimb forces from crawling bats, and an engineering model of hindlimb bending stress reveal that hindlimb dimensions are not responsible for the terrestrial agility of vampire bats, and that some other mechanism underlies their improved ability to crawl (see article by Riskin et al. on pp. 1309-1319).
