About the Cover
Cover:
Cell volume (v; white), the cytosolic osmolarity (Ccyt; red), the cytosolic pressure (Pcyt; blue) and the bulk modulus (MB; yellow) of Paramecium multimicronucleatum plotted against the adaptation osmolarity (Cadp). v decreased gradually while Ccyt increased stepwise, so that Pcyt changed sawtooth-wise as the adaptation osmolarity increased. MB was calculated from v, Ccyt and Pcyt. RVD was activated when Pcyt increased to more than 1.5áPa, as the cell was swollen by decreasing the external osmolarity, while RVI was activated when Pcyt decreased to less than 0áPa as the cell was shrunken by increasing the external osmolarity. CN1, CN2, CN3 (green lines); the critical osmolarities for activation of RVD or RVI. Background pictures of the cells show changes in cell shape after changing the external osmolarity (see article by Iwamoto et al. on pp. 523-537).
