Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) exhibit a median fin morphology typical of basal teleost fishes. Drucker and Lauder (pp. 4479-4494) present a kinematic and experimental hydrodynamic analysis of the function of the dorsal and adipose fins of trout during steady swimming and maneuvering. At low and intermediate speeds, the dorsal fin sheds a strong vortex wake dominated by lateral flows alternating to each side of the body (yellow arrows). Interception of the dorsal fin wake by the tail (along dotted path) is hypothesized as a mechanism for enhancing tail thrust. Photo courtesy of Jamie Glasgow, Washington Trout.
