Developing American locusts (Schistocerca americana) increase in mass over 200-fold from 1st instars to adults 7·weeks later (note 1st instar grasshopper in top left corner). S. Kirkton, J. Niska and J. Harrison (pp. 3003-3012) studied ontogenetic effects on physiology during jumping and found that older grasshoppers have greater aerobic and anaerobic metabolic rates. The higher ATP production rates may partially explain ontogenetic increases in initial power output, while the increasing use of lactate may explain ontogenetic reductions in endurance.
