About the Cover
Cover:
Sea star (Asterias rubens) attached to a rock by its tube feet (upper photo). This is one of the two echinoderm species used by R. Santos, S. Gorb, V. Jamar and P. Flammang to investigate the adhesion of tube feet to rough substrata (pp. 2555-2567). In both species, tube foot discs were shown to be highly compliant, replicating the substratum profile (bottom right photo). This increase in the contact area between the disc and the substratum leads to a higher adhesion force, as demonstrated by the calculation of the 'real' contact area of attached tube feet from 3-D profilograms (bottom left images) of substrata with different degrees of roughness.
