About the Cover

Cover Figure

The ant-eating Australian thorny devil (Moloch horridus; pictured) and the North American horned lizards (Phrynosoma) share unusual morphological characteristics thought to be related to an ant-eating diet. Lower left corner shows capture frames of dietary specialists (Moloch horridus and Phrynosoma) and dietary generalists (Pogona vitticeps and Uma notata) with gape profiles superimposed. Kinematic analysis of feeding behavior revealed shorter gape cycles and lack of prey processing behavior in specialists, resulting in more rapid feeding in the ant specialists (see article by J. J. Meyers and A. Herrel on pp. 113-127).
