About the Cover
Cover:
Savannah monitor lizards (Varanus exanthematicus) experience circulatory limitations during exercise. Experiments by S. L. Munns, L. K. Hartzler, A. F. Bennett and J. W. Hicks (pp. 4111-4120) demonstrated that abdominal pressure doubled during treadmill exercise. These twofold increases in abdominal pressure were associated with a decrease in transmural pressure of the post caval vein and a decrease in venous return. These results suggest that compression of the abdominal veins during locomotion may represent a significant limitation to cardiac output and maximal oxygen consumption in this species.
