About the Cover
Cover:
Photograph of a leopard frog Rana pipiens swimming at the surface with the velocity vector field of the wake resulting from a hindlimb kick superimposed (bottom). The vectors are colour coded by vorticity (blue and red vectors show counterclockwise and clockwise flow, respectively) and illustrate the vortex ring generated by the foot during a kick. The graphs above show a transect through the wake vector field of a synchronized kick (left) and the velocity profile along the transect (right). Johansson and Lauder (pp. 3945-3958) show that each foot produces its own vortex ring almost perpendicular to the swimming direction, thereby supporting a drag-based mechanism of thrust production and not an alternative hypothesis suggesting the formation of one central jet as the feet come together at the end of the kick.
