About the Cover
The Atlantic stingray Dasyatis sabina has a mechanosensory lateral line system that includes both pored and non-pored canals. The non-pored canals on the ventral surface are hypothesized to function as mechanotactile receptors to facilitate the stingray's benthic foraging on small infaunal invertebrates. For a discussion of the mechanotactile hypothesis, see the article by K. P. Maruska and T. C. Tricas (p. 3463-3476). Photograph by Karen P. Maruska.
