About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover: Anoxia-induced rises in cytosolic calcium (Cai) in a Purkinje neuron in a cerebellar brain slice from a juvenile mouse, showing a Ca2+ wave progressing from the dendrites to the soma (top). The numbered individual images correspond to those on the continuous Cai traces (below). The cell was loaded via a patch-clamp electrode with the calcium-sensitive dye, fura-2 (see Ballanyi, pp. 3201-3212). Digital CCD camera imaging was used to measure Cai in the dendritic tree (pink) and soma (red). Administration of 1ámmolál-1 cyanide (CN-) in the presence of the ATP-sensitive K+ channel blocker tolbutamide (200á{mu}molál-1) instantly induces a similar moderate Cai rise in both the soma and dendrites. During the following 60ás, a secondary progressive Cai increase occurs first in the dendritic tree.
