About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover: Squid (Alloteuthis subulata) have very distinct reflective stripes in their skin. These stripes contain large numbers of small reflective cells (iridophores). In living squid, these iridophores can often be seen to undergo changes in spectral reflectivity (see photos in top panel), and in whole-skin preparation the reflective changes can be brought about by superfusion of muscarine. L. M. Mäthger, T. F. T. Collins and P. A. Lima (pp. 1759-1769) report in detail these changes in spectral reflectivity and present data on isolated iridophore cells (see bottom left photo of an isolated iridophore) that correlate the changes in reflectivity with changes in intracellular calcium (see figure in bottom right corner).
