About the Cover
Cover:
Dorsal image of a leopard shark (Triakis semifasciata) swimming while red muscle strain and activation are recorded at three axial positions (see Donley and Shadwick, pp. 1117-1126). The graph illustrates the onset and offset of muscle activity relative to the phase of the strain cycle at each location. The consistency of the activation pattern along the body is unlike that seen in most teleosts and suggests that sharks such as Triakis have no regional specialization in red muscle function. This may indicate that the evolution of differential muscle function along the body occurred after the divergence of cartilaginous and bony fishes.
