The toadfish Tetractenos hamiltoni and Torquigener pleurogramma possess occlusable corneas. During light-adaptation, yellow/orange pigment in both species migrates from reservoirs in the dorsal and ventral cornea into sheet-like processes that cover the cornea. Pigment migration is complete after 60 min of exposure to light, and most of the cornea appears yellow/orange. During dark-adaptation, this process is reversed and the pigment migrates back into the reservoirs. Thus, toadfish are able to adjust their sensitivity to short-wave light according to the surrounding light conditions (see article by Ulrike Siebeck, Shaun Collin, Majid Ghoddusi and Justin Marshall; pp. 2177-2190).
