Cover: Odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) are small, water-soluble, extracellular proteins thought to bind, transport and deliver odour molecules to olfactory receptor proteins in the antennae of insects. In this role, they represent the initial biochemical interface between an insect and its chemosensory environment. OBPs are members of relatively large multi-gene families; the differential expression of OBPs in association with specific olfactory sensilla contributes to the phenotypes of those sensilla. The picture compares the protein sequences and exon domain structures of 23 OBP homologues of Drosophila melanogaster (Diptera) (A,B), and also compares these Drosophila proteins with 14 identified OBPs from the tobacco hawkmoth Manduca sexta (Lepidoptera) (see Vogt, Rogers, Franco and Sun, pp. 719-744).
