About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover: The marine iguana Amblyrhynchus cristatus entertaining some red lava crabs, Grapsus grapsus, on the island of Santa Fe, Galapagos. Despite their fascinating behaviour, we have little information of the field energetics of these reptiles. They can experience average daily body temperature variations of approximately 10 °C, so Butler, Frappell, Wang and Wikelski (pp. 1917-1924) have calibrated heart rate against rate of oxygen consumption at the two extremes of their temperature range. It should now be possible to use heart rate data loggers with marine iguanas in the field to obtain estimates of the energetic costs of various behaviours, including those associated with El Niņo events. The photograph was taken by Peter Frappell.
