About the Cover
Cover: The complexity of the dipteran wing hinge allows for a wide variability of wing motion. Nine of the thirteen steering muscles associated with each wing are shown. In the bluebottle blowfly Calliphora vicina, each muscle has unique response properties during visually induced turning reactions. As a result of this population activity, the function of each muscle depends not only on its own changing pattern of activation but also on the activity of other muscles (Balint and Dickinson, pp. 4213-4226).
