About the Cover
Cover: The cover shows the eurythermal goby, Gillichthys mirabilis, superimposed on the negative estuary in which it lives. The estuary empties twice a day during tidal cycles, creating temperature fluctuations from 7 to 38°C. The graph shows the thermal stability of the molecular chaperone Hsc70 purified from G. mirabilis. This chaperone is a relatively thermally stable protein that can function at temperatures well above the ecologically relevant temperature range of this goby (see Place and Hofmann, pp. 2675-2682). Cover design by Sean Place; photographs by Gretchen Hofmann and Tzung-horng Yang.
