About the Cover
Cover: 'Yolk-ball' preparations of embryos of Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus. The yolk sac was separated from the embryonic body of an intact embryo 2 days before hatching (A,B). The incision on the yolk ball healed during incubation in balanced salt solution, as demonstrated by Trypan Blue staining (C,D) and scanning electron microscope observations (E,F) before (C,E) and after (D,F) incubation. The yolk ball consists of the yolk and the covering yolk-sac membrane, which contains a rich population of chloride cells. This newly developed yolk-ball incubation system is an excellent experimental model for studies on chloride cell differentiation and function (see Shiraishi, Hiroi, Kaneko, Matsuda, Hirano and Mori, pp. 1883-1888).
