Starting a conversation

Early career researchers are not only the newest wave of emerging researchers but also the largest, and so we have launched our new interview series ‘Conversation’ with a focus on this next generation of scientists. Our interviewees discuss their career paths, the wider issues in research and publishing, and what they think will and should change in the future. Read the Editorial about this new interview series and how JEB supports early career researchers.

Conversation: Caroline Williams

Caroline Williams

“Early career scientists should think about their personal goals as well as their professional research-related goals.”

Our first Conversation interview is with Caroline Williams, Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, USA, where her group studies evolution of metabolic physiology in ectotherms. Read her thoughts on stepping back from academia before leaping in, crafting simple narratives and how planning is crucial to success.

JEB in the news: Ground spiders overwhelm victims with supersticky silk

A ground spider subduing a larger wolf spider

Editor's choice: Ground spiders often pick fights with other arachnids and insects that are larger than themselves, making it imperative that the attackers overwhelm their victims as fast as possible. Now Jonas Wolff and co-workers reveal in a Research article – reported in National Geographic and New Scientist – that the plucky arachnids ensnare their prey in a super-tough and stretchy silk that other species use to secure their webs. Read the full article here.
