Movie 1. A fruit fly performs a subtle ‘dodge’ sideways flight maneuver in which its yaw orientation remains nearly constant while it moves from one straight trajectory to another parallel trajectory. While performing this dodge, the insect undergoes a burst of leftward acceleration followed by a burst of rightward acceleration.
Movie 2. A fruit fly performs a ‘sashay’ sideways flight maneuver in which it continuously reorients to face the inside of a turn. For this sashay, the body velocity is nearly perpendicular to the yaw direction of the insect. During the maneuver, the insect generates a maximum sideways acceleration of about 40% g, gravitational acceleration.
