Movie 1: High-speed video of a visually induced flight speed response. An automated testing procedure of the fruit fly’s flight speed response is implemented using TrackFly. A single fly is brought to hover stably near the middle of a wind tunnel by controlling the horizontal speed of a bilaterally presented sine grating (not to scale). Next, the fly is stimulated during 1 s with a sine grating of a particular temporal and spatial frequency, to which it reacts by changing its flight speed. The phase offset of the pattern is adjusted in real-time to maintain a constant temporal frequency of the pattern with respect to the fly (one-parameter open-loop paradigm). Positions of the fly are shown every 5 ms. Blue and red squares indicate the fly’s position prior to and after onset of the 1 s test, respectively. High-speed recordings were performed for control and demonstration purposes.
