Movie 1 and 2. Auditory neuroethology lab animation. Animations illustrating the acoustic scanning behavior of the echolocating bat as it finds its way through an opening in a net to gain access to a tethered insect. Each animation shows data from a single trial, with the tethered insect at different locations behind the net. The animations display an overhead view of the bat’s flight path and sonar beam pattern as it negotiates the net and intercepts the insect prey. The beam axis, illustrated by a line at the center of the beam pattern, helps to guide the eye to the bat’s sequential scanning. We’ve elongated this line when the scanning locks onto an edge of the net hole or the prey item.
