Fig. S1. (A−H) Frames from time-lapse videos showing extra-embryonic bubbles in eggs (N=8) of Manduca sexta held in dry air at 27°C. Frames were taken within 20 min of cavitation. In all cases, bubbles were associated with but not attached to spiracles, visible as the centers of darkened tracheal trees. In some cases, bubbles clearly were deformed because they were trapped between the embryo and the eggshell.
Movie 1. Timelapse movie of a Manduca egg. A single egg of Manduca sexta photographed through a stereomicroscope every 2 min. The timelapse movie covers the period from a few hours after oviposition to just past hatching. Cavitation occurs about 3/4 of the way through development and is coincident with the appearance of bubbles in the periembryonic space.
