Mean phase was calculated as the mean of the mean phases from 5 preparations in which three different sized spikes could be clearly identified as belonging to individual neurons. For an explanation of the calculation of mean vector length see Materials and methods. (A) There was no significant difference between mean phases of small, medium and large spikes. (B) There was a significant difference between the mean vector length of the small spikes and the medium spikes, and between small spikes and large spikes. There was no significant difference between the mean vector length of the medium and large spikes.
