Movie 1. Perspective view of fin for the baseline case deformation parameters: traveling wave frequency is 2 Hz, maximum angular amplitude is 30 deg., the ratio of the wavelength to the length of the fin is 0.5, and the fin is 10 times longer than it is tall. A velocity isosurface of 5 cm s−1 is shown. The movie illustrates the basic mechanism of thrust production, whereby a streamwise jet occurs through the movement of fluid in the direction of the traveling wave. Shown below is a plot of the instantaneous surge, heave and sway forces.
Movie 2. Movie is identical to Supplementary Movie 1 but shows a bottom view, with a transparent isosurface to enable viewing of fin outline.
