Movie 1. Stop-action movie of a cell of the dinoflagellate Lingulodinium polyedrum strain HJ approaching the barrier within the test region of the microfluidic device. The flow is right to left. The 35 µm diameter cell becomes immobilized at a barrier (thin vertical line on the left side) with 15 µm clearance that is impassable to the cell. The resulting increase in hydrodynamic drag provides the mechanical stimulus for triggering emission of bioluminescence from vesicles at the periphery of the cell. The images were recorded at 250 frames s−1.
