Movie 1. This video shows Caribbean spiny lobsters, P. argus, in laboratory conditions displaying the stereotypical appetitive and alarm responses to food odors and hemolymph in that order, and the reversal in behavior in response to hemolymph after ablating the aesthetasc sensilla. First, an intact lobster displays the appetitive response to food odor (shrimp juice), which is delivered to the front part of the aquarium. The intact lobster then displays an alarm response to conspecific hemolymph, followed by a suppressed appetitive response to food odour. Next, a different lobster, with ablated aesthetasc sensilla, displays appetitive responses to both food odour and hemolymph.
Movie 2. This video shows spiny lobsters in laboratory conditions displaying antennae whipping, and high frequency shaking in response to conspecific hemolymph.
Movie 3. This video shows spiny lobsters, P. argus, in their natural habitat in the Florida Keys displaying alarm responses to conspecific hemolymph. The alarm response is the stereotypical retreat that is often followed by a turn and forward walking to another nearby den.
