Movie 1. The left cheek pouch and retractor muscle are exposed in an anaesthetized hamster. Branches of cranial nerve XI were electrically stimulated to mimic retractor muscle activity observed in pouching videos (quick contractions and extended tetanus). A corn kernel was pushed through the pouch opening, pointed end first (matching the orientation most often seen on video tapes). Combined pressure applied with a blunt probe (through the pouch opening) and retractor activity were needed to move the kernel to its position at the beginning of this video segment. Oral analgesic (meloxicam, 0.2 mg kg−1) was given 15 min prior to intraperitoneal injection of anesthesia (sodium pentobarbital, 0.9 mg kg−1). Anesthesia was maintained with 0.05 mg kg−1 subcutaneous injections every 30−40 min, and a lethal dose was combined with isofluorane inhalant to expedite euthanasia when recordings were complete. Procedures are described in greater detail in the Materials and methods.
