Initial states were drawn from uniform random distributions between Formula 1, Formula 1 and {Delta}{rho}=3–25° for X. peckii (A,B), and between Formula 1, Formula 1 and {Delta}{rho}=0.1–10° for Drosophila (C,D). In both cases s.d.1 and s.d.2 were one-half the initial sampling bases. Gray scale is proportional to f, the sum of the absolute difference between empirical data and model, darkest bars indicating best fit (see key in A).
