There was an error published in J. Exp. Biol. 210, 2170-2181.

In the Introduction, the second sentence of the second paragraph reads:

From Eqn 1 and Eqn 2 it follows that e=a-(bc) and that the scaling exponent f=(bd) (for a review, see Speakman, 2005).

This should be replaced by the sentence

From Eqn 1 and Eqn 2 it follows that e=ac^-b and the scaling exponent f=bd (for a review, see Speakman, 2005).
